So many things will linger in the memory - the Gil Scott Heron, rock star looks, the languid, nonchalant way he moved around the pitch, the backheel passes (and penalties), the explosive goals, the exuberant celebrations (apparently, a habit he had to develop after crowds complained about his unwillingness to celebrate his goals at Corinthians with anything more than a shrug of the shoulders.) 

But we will also remember his integrity and intelligence off the pitch where he was a significant figure in Brazilian politics during the final days of the military dictatorship in the 1980s.

 RIP Socrates, quite possibly the coolest dude ever to play the game.
