Hansen

Carragher

Barnes

Souness

Gerrard

McDermott

Dalglish

It's not easy, but here's my starting 11.

Reina's the best between the sticks for me, although Grobbelaar's distrubution and wobbly legs win him a place on the bench ahead of Dudek and Clemence.

I've got surging runs from defence with Hansen and a solid flank with England's second most capped right back. I had to bump King Kenny even though he's the best ever No. 7 because I wanted Barnes and Beardsley in same team. Alonso is the glue with his unerring distribution and hopefully he'd stay this time seeing as I'm managing now not Benitez.

Stevie G is going to have to play the holding role but there are goals galore in the team from Owen, Rush and Riise at left back. I've also gone for a bum-warming specialist with David Fairclough coming off the bench to score me a hat-trick in the final 10 minutes. So that means no room for Keegan, Houghton, Souness, Aldridge, R Kennedy or Hunt which is a travesty. Hughes is the captain mainly because he's got the best grin I've ever seen from anyone picking up a trophy.

Liverpool XI

Reina

Riise

Hansen

Hughes (c)

Neal

Barnes

Gerrard

Alonso

Beardsley

Rush

Owen

Subs: Grobbelaar, Hypia, McMahon, Fowler, McDermott, Dalglish, Fairclough

There is no mention of Rob Jones anywhere.

I first saw Liverpool play at Anfield in 1971, drawn there by the prospect of seeing John Toshack forming a new partnership with the recently arrived Kevin Keegan. They beat a very good Leicester team, 3-1 (or maybe 3-2), with the duo already showing signs of forming a telepathic partnership. "Toshack, Keegan, one nil," as David Coleman used to say. My heart says that was Liverpool's finest ever strike partnership, but my head says it was another one. A couple of players from that early 70s vintage remain in my dream-team though. It is:

Clemence, Carragher, Hansen, Hughes, A. Kennedy, Souness, McDermott, Gerrard, Barnes, Rush, Dalglish. Subs: Reina, Hyypia, Riise, Alonso, Keegan, McManaman. (Am I allowed to have David Fairclough kitted up in case of emergencies?)
